FMCSA Takes a Bite Out of Distracted Driving: Safer Roads Ahead?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has been at the forefront of combatting distracted driving within the trucking industry, a problem that claims thousands of lives each year. By implementing new regulations and technologies,

the agency aims to reduce crashes and improve road safety for all travelers.

The FMCSA's focus on distracted driving is not new, but recent efforts have underscored the severity of the issue. According to the FMCSA,

looked but failed to halt the vehicle about 636 lives every day, making it a leading cause of fatalities in the United States.

With the help of advanced technologies and increased enforcement, the agency has made noticeable gains in reducing distracted driving incidents.

**Distracted Driving: A Persistent Problem**

Distracted driving, though preventable, remains a significant threat to road safety. The FMCSA defines distracted driving as any activity that takes a driver's eyes, hands, or attention away from the road. This includes interactions with passengers, eating, grooming, and using electronic devices—all of which contribute to a substantial number of crashes and fatalities annually. Some startling statistics:

• The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that nearly 10% of fatal crashes involve distracted driving

• In 2020, 3,600 people were killed and 390,000 were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver, costing the economy over $44 billion

• Distracted driving costs the U.S. economy around $177 billion annually

The Shift in Focus

In recent years, the FMCSA has implemented strict regulations to combat distracted driving among truckers. The agency encourages drivers to remain attentive, prohibiting them from using handheld devices while operating a commercial vehicle. Handheld devices include smartphones, GPS systems, and laptops, among others. Even with these restrictions, texting or talking on a device ranks high among the 10 leading causes of accidents involving large trucks, according to the FMCSA.

A recently released commercial aimed at discouraging truckers from using handheld devices garnered a significant response. The message highlights the devastating consequences of losing focus behind the wheel. Dorothy McAfee, associate administrator with the FMCSA, noted:

We really are having conversations about the very serious consequences of distracted driving. It's just completely unacceptable. We have laws in place to protect our children and public, now we need common sense rule adoption.
