LAKE HAVASU'S PATH KEEPER: Meet the Unsung Heroes Working Behind the Scenes to Maintain the City's Iconic Waterways
The Lake Havasu City waterways are a beloved fixture for tourists and locals alike, providing endless opportunities for recreation and relaxation. However, maintaining the city's iconic lakes and channels requires a Herculean effort from a team of dedicated individuals often overlooked by the public eye.
Meet the path keepers of Lake Havasu: a group of skilled and passionate workers who labored tirelessly to ensure the waterways remain safe, accessible, and enjoyable for the community. Their story is one of hard work, dedication, and passion for their craft.
At the heart of the path keeping team is Mark Smith, a Lake Havasu City native who has spent over 20 years working on the waterways. As a former laborer turned supervisor, Smith has seen it all and is now responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the path keeping team. When asked about his job, Smith says:

"When you're on the water, it's easy to forget about the people working behind the scenes to make it all happen. But without our path keepers, this city wouldn't be the same. They're the ones who wake up every morning, ready to face whatever challenges the day may bring.
From unlocking the lock to sweeping the decks, the path keepers' tasks are numerous and demanding. Smith explains the importance of keeping the waterways clear:
Keeping the lake free of debris is crucial. Not just for aesthetics, but for the safety of boaters and swimmers. There's no shortage of trash out there. Our job is to keep it all out of harm's way.
According to Smith, the team is made up of approximately 20 laborers, laborers' apprentices, dispatchers, and administrative support staff. To understand the breadth of their work, consider the following breakdown of their daily tasks:
DAY IN THE LIFE OF A LAKE HAVASU PATH KEEPER
Lock operation: opening and closing the Route 95 Lock to allow boats and watercraft to pass
Maintenance: inspecting and repairing the city's canals and water treatment systems
Debris removal: hauling away trash and other obstructions from the waterways
Water quality monitoring: testing and maintaining water quality to ensure it meets health and safety standards
Boat launching: assisting boaters with launching their vessels from designated ramps
Area patrol: keeping the city's lakes and channels free of weeds and debris
For those who think being a path keeper sounds straightforward, Smith has a warning:
"It's not the glamorous job some people might think it is. It takes a toll on your body and your mind. But when you see boaters and swimmers out on the water, enjoying the city's recreational facilities, all the hard work is worth it."
Despite the demands of the job, Smith remains optimistic about the team's prospects. He notes that while funding has been up and down over the years, his department still receives sufficient support from the city council:
It's not a cakewalk by any means, but I've seen some great growth and development in the past few years. Believe it or not, we've got a great working relationship with our council members.
